So, at the end of our stay at Augrabies Falls, Lee and I drove the 400km to the Kgalagadi National Frontier Park to start the second part of our adventure. This was the first time we had visited the park in the winter months and were intrigued to see the place in a different season.

In May this year, Lee and I took a trip to the Augrabies Falls National Park, just at the time that the Orange River was in full flow due to the high rainfall the month before. The four day stay at the falls revealed 55 species recorded, which was a great return alongside the sight of the magnificent Falls.

In April, Lee and I visited Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve, which is located between Robertson and McGregor. It has a striking, rugged landscape. Due to temperatures of over 30c every day we decided to limit our birding to short spells, early morning and late afternoon, and despite these temperatures we managed to see over 60 species.

We camped for 2 weeks at the Tsendze rustic camp near Mopani during February. The night of our arrival more than 200 mm of rain fell over a wide area. All rivers in the park flooded and for days all dirt roads were impassible.

I regularly try to get some birding in when travelling to East London. Unfortunately I am usually rained out. However, for this trip I made time at the beginning and end of my stay in the hope of getting good weather on at least one day. Rietvlei Nature Reserve, near Pretoria, has a good number of larger game including rhino and buffalo. But the grassland birding is also very good.
