Farther afield: Green Point Park, Cape Town

This report was provided by Steve and Lee Peck.

So, yet again, I set out to compete in the Cape Town Cycle Tour –  a little race of 109 km around the Cape Peninsula!

However, before the Sunday (race day) Lee and I decided to visit the Green Point Park next to the stadium for a little spot of R&R and, of course, the camera came too.

In hazy sunshine I explored one of my favourite birding spots in the heart of Cape Town and was not disappointed.

Splashing about in the man-made ponds amongst the lily pads were numerous Common Moorhens alongside their offsprings. Reed  Cormorants ducked and dived looking for their next meal and some rather large fish basked near the surface.

Scanning the freshwater ponds we spotted Little Grebes, Yellow-billed Ducks and lots of juvenile Barn Swallows enjoying the warm weather before they start making their way northwards.

Of course, let’s not forget the Guineafowl, Red-winged Starlings and Rock Doves all strutting around the well maintained lawns.

No lifers or special sightings but it was lovely just to connect with the local bird residents and to chill out a bit listening to the gentle buzzing as the insects went about their work before mine started the next day!
