It was with trepidation that twelve birders in four vehicles left the Eastcliff SPAR parking area en route to the African Marsh Harrier trail on the Zoetendal Vinyards & River Estate. The weather forecast was for strong winds with the possibility of rain. Despite the inclement weather, everyone agreed that it was a very enjoyable outing to a stunning venue. Probably one of the most popular birding outings on the calendar, this is the Overberg tapestry at its best. The air was sharp and clean – a mere 4 degrees – and the early mist contributed to the drama of the rolling countryside.

It was still dark as the nine birders left Hermanus just after 7 am, destination Napier. A total list of 71 bird species were recorded, which is excellent given the time of year.

Despite the icy 3 degrees, enthusiasm was high. As always, the early morning drive out of Hermanus towards Stanford was magnificent. A glowing red sun rose slowly over the mountains, and it was sufficient reward for braving the cold weather.
