Course: Summer Migrants

WORKSHOP ON SUMMER MIGRANTS IN HERMANUS: 2 SEPTEMBER 2023

THE SUMMER MIGRANTS workshop by Anton Odendal is aimed at celebrating the majority of migratory birds that visit southern Africa during summer months. Resident species that could possibly be confused with these migrants are also featured and potentially confusing identification characteristics are illustrated. The text used during the course is included in basic workshop notes to be forwarded to all participants before the course starts. The workshop will assist participants to appreciate the birds that visit our shores in summer even more. Reserve your spot now to avoid disappointment.

The course contents are as follows:

07h30 to 08h00: Registration and tea/ coffee

08h00 to 09h00: The art of deception: The tricks that cuckoos and other brood parasites are up to

09h00 to 10h00: Swallows, swifts and martins of South Africa and the terns of the Western Cape

10h00 to 10h15: Tea

10h15 to 11h15: Focus on migratory raptors

11H15 to 12h30: Migratory waders to the Western Cape

12h30 to 13h00: Lunch

13h00 to 13h30: Migratory waders to the Western Cape (Continued)

13h30 to 14h30: Rare and vagrant migrants to South Africa

14h30 to 15h30: Case-study on other migrants of the Kruger National Park
